Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This treasury contains thirteen stories by different authors. A lot of experienced writers, Penelope Lively and Jane Yolen to name a few, have contributed their talent to this collection and the result is a light, amusing book for young readers. The stories ranges from retellings of old Scottish fairy tales, such as "Tamlane," to quirky originals, like Russell Hoban's "La Corona and the Tin Frog" about a wind-up frog in love with a lady on the picture inside of a cigar box lid. Even familiar children's classics such as Cinderella are made anew in these stories-a tale by Margaret Baker reveals what happened to the ugly sisters. While these stories are probably meant for boys and girls, this particular collection may be more appealing to girls. A lot of the stories focus on love, usually a young woman or man saving their beloved from some peril; boys may not find those interesting. Bailey's illustrations can be sweet or humorous, but they are all a delight. The pictures complement the sprightly tone of the stories. Each story is a short, amusing look into magical worlds where animals talk and dragons go fishing. 2003, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 5 to 8.
