Overview

Those used to the hard rockin' drive of guitarist, songwriter, and singer Tinsley Ellis's Alligator releases will have to take a chill pill when they pop KINGPIN into the CD player. On this set, the good ol' Southern white boy blues rocker is as easy pleasin' as Jimmy Reed or J. J. Cale. And Ellis's vocals, which used to get stuck on scream, are of the mature variety now, ranging from sexy mellow to righteous bellow. On the opening cover of "Heartfixin' Business," a tune most associated with Albert King, Ellis's crooning is smooth and seductive, while his guitar bites like a hungry hound dog. He goes for a big funky beat and lean picking on the old Gladys Knight hit "Imagination" and takes a southern rock anthem approach to Arthur Alexander's consciousness-raising "Let's Think About It." Ellis is also a great songwriter -- he's the pen behind Jonny Lang's killer "A Quitter Never Wins" -- and his originals like the dark tale of lust and temptation "Dying to Do Wrong" and the love song "Sweet Pea" are equally impressive. But it's the guitarist's growth that's most impressive. His playing is as technically stunning as ever, only now Ellis is internalizing the music -- every lick portrays the soul of the songs.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Cub Koda
Ellis turns in a strong set of originals and choice covers, all fueled by his usual strong guitar work. Highlights include "Dyin' to Do Wrong," "I'll Be Loving You," and "Slingshots and Boomerangs."
