Like Keller's other books it has tremendous crossover appeal, but it is also ideal for the faithful, those who are looking for a closer connection to Jesus and Christianity.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Reverend Timothy Keller, the bestselling author of The Reason for God, The Prodigal God, and Counterfeit Gods, now shares his deepest insights about the life of Jesus. He approaches that life through the Gospel of Mark, generally accepted to be the earliest of the four gospels. (Hand-selling tip: Reverend Keller has been praised for his "intellectual, brimstone-free sermons." He has been called "a C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century.")

Kirkus Reviews

Exploring the life of Jesus through the Gospel of Mark.

Preacher and author Keller (Generous Justice: How God's Grace Makes Us Just, 2010, etc.) provides a fresh biography of Jesus from an evangelical standpoint. Focusing on Mark, the earliest, shortest and most direct of the four gospels, the author paints a picture of a savior who was sure of his own identity and fate while most of those around him were not. Keller locates various themes from Mark's narrative and discusses each in turn, grouped under two major headings: "The King," regarding Jesus' identity, and "The Cross," regarding his purpose. In discussing the identity of Jesus, the author describes him as a man both deeply imbedded within his culture and times while also living counter to them in many ways. Jesus never doubted his identity or his ability and indeed made it clear from the beginning that he was not merely the messiah, but something more than what his culture had expected in the messiah—he was God's son. Of course, writes Keller, few understood the magnitude of his identity and his message. Moving on to Jesus' ultimate purpose—or from a broader standpoint, the purpose of his incarnation—the author describes a man aware of his upcoming sacrifice, and indeed, a man in continual sacrifice, as he had descended from heaven to live on earth. This sacrifice is the true model for human love: "All real, life-changing love is substitutionary sacrifice." Keller's work is more than a description of Jesus; it is also peppered with pastoral advice. His goal is for the reader to better understand Jesus in order to better imitate his life. Unlike the many academic and sensational biographies of Jesus in recent years, this one takes faith in Jesus largely for granted. The narrative is well-researched, with numerous references to authors as diverse as C.S. Lewis and Franz Kafka, but Keller does not attempt to prove Jesus' divinity or find the "historical Jesus."

Captivating reading from a Christian perspective.

New & exciting insight from the Gospel of Mark

King's Cross by Timothy Keller is a study of the life of Jesus and his message through the Gospel of Mark. Keller who is the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan has written several other books about Christianity, but this is a compilation of his sermons on Mark. Mark is considered to be the oldest of the Gospels and is also the shortest. Mark keeps his Gospel short but sweet focusing on the true message of Christ. Keller's wisdom is evident on every page with a great deal of insight for readers. He encourages readers to know Jesus and accept Him as their Savior. "[Jesus] is both the rest and the storm, both the victim and the wielder of the flaming sword, and you must accept him or reject him on the basis of both. Either you'll have to kill him or you'll have to crown him," pg. 162. Keller's writing is straight-forward, much like Mark's, and filled with knowledge. Both readers new to Mark and those who have read the Gospel many times will find much to consider. "When [Jesus] comes back, everything sad will come untrue," pg. 17. His insight into marriage makes me want him to write a marriage guide that gives understanding to this statement: "If two people love each other more than they love God, their minor fight will become major fights, and major fights will become world-shaking cataclysms, because neither can take the other's displeasure or the other's failure. They become isolated from each other and eventually their relationship begins to disintegrate." pg 204. Keller tells readers that the basis of failure or success in every relationship of their life begins with their relationship with Jesus, and that He is their only hope of a satisfying life on earth with the promise of eternal life after. I read a lot of books like this, and Keller's stands out because it is both intelligent and easy to understand. This is a must read for those early in their walk with the Lord and those looking to strengthen their faith.

    An easy yet eloquent read.

This exposition on Mark is fresh, insightful, and engaging. It has deepened my understanding of the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Consequently, the wonder of who God is and what He has done in order to have a loving relationship with me has also deepened, and yet feels lighter than ever before.
No regrets on this purchase. Will recommend without reservations.
