What Was There Not to Like About This Book?

This is one of the best books in the Ranger Apprentice series. I read it slowly just so I could savor the story. I have read the series from the beginning. I loved the first 4 books, but I was a little disappointed when Will was no longer Halt's apprentice. The books were just not as entertaining. In fact without Halt, Will, and Horace together they lacked the spark of the others in the series. I enjoyed Erak's Ransom because Halt was back. However, The Kings of Clonmel far surpassed it.

First of all only two women characters made brief appearances, the Lady Pauline, Halt's wife and Alyss, Will's love interest. Maybe women characters aren't Flanagan's strongest suit. This book is about Halt, Horace, and Will. That fact alone made the story outstanding for me.

Halt learns about a religious cult whose leader is more interested in money than helping people. The Outsiders show up in towns and offer protection against bandits. If the people follow the path of the cult's leader, Tennyson, their families are safe. If they do not, the bandits will attack and destroy them. Tennyson and his cult move into the kingdom of Hibernia which is close to Araluen. That attracks Halt's interest immediately. There is a twist about how Will joins him on this assignment and how Horace beomes involved in the plot. The twist is a delightful and clever way to keep Flanagan's three best characters in books to follow in the series.

Halt's past comes back to haunt him. It is a past he would rather forget about, but with the friendship and understanding of Will and Horace, he moves forward to accept its challenges. I cannot say any more about Halt's secret, but it is very entertaining.

The thing that makes this book so good is the friendship among these three friends. They act so human which makes the book so delightful to read. They disagree, bicker, and tease each other relentlessly, but when it comes down to loyalty and protecting each other's lives, they are the best of friends. Friendship is the key element in the story. Halt is the plotter and thinker with years of experience, Horace the warrior who's not as young and naive as he use to be, and Will is growing more clever and confident in his skills as a ranger.

The story flows quickly, the twists are delightful, the interaction of the characters is so entertaining, and the ending has a sort of sad twist. It is a good book and I thoroughly enjoyed every word. I can't wait for the book 9. I just hope Flanagan finishes it quickly.

    YEA FOR WILL AND HALT!!!!

I am so excited this book is out and I just ordered it on B&N.com. This is an excellent series for boys and girls alike. It is about a young orphan boy who grows up in the castle with a group of kids who are orphans as well. the king takes them in and prepares them for their future. Will wants to be a battleman so bad but is not as big and tough as the other boys. Later he is called to be a ranger. The whole kingdom fears these rangers due to their secretiveness and impressions of magic. Will ends up being taken under Halt, their fief's ranger, and learns so many things. Will is a young boy with a lot of energy and determination. The last book #7 actually falls between books #5 and #6. I am so glad this book will have Halt in it because his insight and affection towards Will helps make these books awesome!!!

Low on Action, Not the Best in Series

This Ranger’s Apprentice was my least favorite in the series. Barely anything happens in the book and the one thing that does happen doesn’t even reach completion at the end of the story. The new characters are mostly annoying and unforgettable. I found myself wanting to skim a lot of pages. There are about 10 pages, maximum, of actual action in the book. While I love the rest of the story, this one doesn’t have me looking forward to or excited about book 9 in the series.

Secrets are normally hard to get from a Ranger...

In The King of Clonmel we see the history of Will's mentor, Halt take on a new life of its own. In something that has never been seen as deeply in the early books, we get to experience a side to the relationships between Halt, Will, and Horace blossom into one of mutual respect, pride, and caring. This book contains a "lighter side" view into the between the main characters and I found myself laughing out loud in response to their conversations. If you want to more about what make a Ranger and their friends "click" then this book is for you!
