A fantastic book of Paks and her friends!
This was a wonderful book as a follow-up to Oath of Fealty. Paks, is a main character in this book, but not the most important this time, although she is the one that leads the book through its progression. The Duke, Kieri Phelan, is also one of the main characters and you learn a lot more about him in this book. He is a wonderful character that we've never heard too much about his past but now we will. He is a lot more than just a mercenary commander. As he tries to come to grips with his life after the wars in the South in the last book he now is trying to put together his lands in the North. He has to bring together is people as well as his mercenaries and make them one. Not as a unit that is two groups that can work together. He needs to make sure the land is taking care of and is getting stronger and stronger feelings for the land. He doesn't realize that this is due to his half Elven background. Paks goes through many trials and tribulations after leaving the Dukes company of mercenaries. During these trials she grows and finds many gifts that she has and it's slowly becoming obvious that she's not an ordinary soldier anymore. Eventually she goes to the school for paladins and is asked to become one. She finds this is the best time of her life. She loves the people the work. The learning and everything that goes with it and her skills and gifts become stronger as she does so. Eventually, she is asked to go on a quest to find Lupan's base and terrible things happen there. When she returns to the paladin school. She finds that she has lost all of her courage or so she thinks. Upon not being able to fight any longer. She leaves the school and goes out on her own in midwinter no supplies and has a horrible six months where she almost dies repeatedly. Eventually, she is healed by master OakHollow, and finds that she is in far better shape than she was before and is now a true paladin of the gods, not just of Gird, but called by the gods themselves. She is then called to go on several quests the final one is to find the true King of the North. This is where things get really exciting. The people of that land. After seeing what she can do want her to become the King when the old king, dies but she says no. She says that her quest is to find the King not become the King. So she leaves again on her quest to find the true King Prince that was stolen away when he was five years old. His mother was an elf and his father was the human king of the land. His mother was killed when he was kidnapped as were the other people in their party. The Prince was taken into captivity for many years. When he returned to his land delves steamed him to damaged to ever become king and so they never told him who he was, nor did they tell anyone else and they would not tell Paks who he was.but, she had his sword that had been made for him when he was born by his mother's orders. She had been carrying it. The day that they were attacked. Eventually, the sword fell into the hands of Alimn Haverack, many years later gave it to , the Duke at the time of his wedding for his wife. The Dukes swore never to draw the sword since it was his wife's weapon and he didn't want to impose upon her. After she was murdered along with her two children. He put it on the wall and it was never touched again until Paks used it in an emergency to fight a demon. She followed this sword on her quest as a way to find the Prince. Now read the b
