Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Leslie Henshaw, DVM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This book is a clinical update for the small animal veterinarian. This is the 12th edition, the most recent edition having been published in 1992.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide up-to-date management of medical and surgical problems in small animal medicine. Authors of the more than 300 articles are active in their respective clinical specialty. The book meets its stated objectives.
Audience: This book is targeted for veterinary students and clinical small animal veterinarians. The contributors are recognized experts in their specialties.
Features: Many of the articles are poorly referenced and, on occasion, articles contain unsubstantiated opinions that are not always stated as such. The index is thorough and includes pertinent articles found in the previous two editions. The appendixes contain very useful updated information on reference values and commonly used drugs.
Assessment: This book is a necessary digest of current veterinary literature. As with any anthology, the quality of articles varies, but overall it is a very useful text. This is a timely edition to the series.
