Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Marcella D Ridgway, VMD, MS, DACVIM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This is the 15th edition of a book detailing the treatment of medical diseases of small animals, primarily dogs and cats. It is available in a 1,413-page, 279-chapter hardcover version, with an additional 86 chapters available on the book's companion website, or in a 365-chapter electronic version. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: This is a frequently updated practical reference on the current standard-of-care management of small animal medical disorders. The book does an excellent job of maintaining the intended focus on treatment rather than pathogenesis and diagnosis and on providing concise and readily accessed information.
Audience: The audience includes practicing veterinarians and veterinary students. It is also widely used by small animal specialty residents as a board preparation tool and by small animal interns as a vital clinical reference. In maintaining the book's long-standing reputation for exceptional quality and clinical relevance, the editors have engaged over 300 authors of notable clinical expertise.
Features: This edition covers a broad range of medical conditions of dogs and cats, while information pertaining to birds and exotic pets that appeared in older editions has been dropped from the most recent editions. Chapters are organized within sections that correspond to a particular organ system or specialty area (respiratory diseases, critical care, and toxicological diseases). Chapters are intentionally short, efficiently summarizing current treatment options, prognosis, and recommendations for nursing and monitoring. Most chapters include a brief definition of the disease process and notation of diagnostic criteria, but treatment approaches remain the focus. The book is conservative, though not lacking, in the use of illustrations, but all are of exceptional image quality, highly pertinent, and useful, and some are available on the website rather than in the book to further conserve space. Likewise, a number of chapters and most of the appendixes are likewise available only electronically or on the website. The book makes excellent use of tables. The editors have wisely preserved the successful format that has characterized the previous editions.
Assessment: This is an outstanding achievement that upholds the book's tradition as a highly respected and widely used mainstay in the small animal library.
