Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Susan Elizabeth Phillips is the only four-time recipient of the Romance Writers of America’s prestigious Favorite Book of the Year Award. A resident of the Chicago suburbs, Phillips is also a hiker, a gardener, a reader, a wife, and the mother of two grown sons.

Biography

Susan Elizabeth Phillips believes if Jane Austen were writing today, novels like Pride and Prejudice would be sitting on the bookshelf alongside the love stories that she and her fellow romance novelists pen. "Oh, and one more thing," she said, wagging her finger at a Chicago Tribune reporter in 1999, "Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy should have kissed at the end of that story, and if I'd have written it, they would have -- and it would have been a good kiss, too."

Such sass is Phillips' calling card, and since her 1994 football romance It Had to Be You, she’s been stitching threads of humor into her romance novels.

"I'm not a particularly funny person in person. I can't tell jokes, but it just seems like it happened when I started to write," she told The Romance Reader in 1997. "It wasn't anything that was planned. I'm a very intuitive writer; I just sort of let the characters talk to me, and they started saying funny things, so I wrote them down."

A schoolteacher until her first son was born, Phillips began writing in the early 1980s with her best friend and neighbor. The two were both regular readers and decided to try their hand at a book of their own, plotting their story during nightly bike rides with their toddlers in tow. They got the name of a publisher at Dell who liked the book and published it under the pen name Justine Cole.

Her friend moved into a legal career, but Phillips continued writing and publishing, this time under her own name. She released what she calls her "big books," titles like Fancy Pants and Honey Moon featuring Hollywood starlets and jet-setting London socialites.

Her stories, she has said, moved outside of the mainstream after that. She gives her romantic characters emotional wounds and personal difficulties that often impede their inevitable happy endings. But without such obstacles, there would be no story.

"I've grown increasingly interested in writing about family dynamics and much less interested in sticking a psychopath with a gun in any of my books," she said in an interview with the web site iVillage. "Technically, I've simply learned how to capitalize on my own distinctive voice and how to be a better storyteller."

The healing process that the characters go through is what makes the novels work. "Creative plotting adds sparkle, and entertaining, well-drawn secondary characters round out the novel, but it is the growing, healing relationship between the protagonists and how they finally form a family that touches the heartstrings and makes this contemporary romance an unforgettable read," the Library Journal wrote in a review of Phillips' 2000 book First Lady.

The dialogue, she has said, is also important. The exchanges in romance novels are satisfying to women who love to communicate, she told USA Today. "Women really like to talk. That's one of our processes. We talk to gather information. Women love the connection that comes from conversation," she said. "My husband says we broadcast. He thinks through things before he talks, but he says women just kind of broadcast until they zero in on what they want to say."

Phillips has also disputed the notion that romance novels are nothing more than books about "throbbing thighs." They aren't about sex, she told the Chicago Tribune in 1992, but are instead complicated fictions about women taking charge of their lives and being the stories' heroes.

"The woman always wins the man," she said, "and he always gets tamed in the end."

Good To Know

Phillips wanted to publish her first novel under the pseudonym Chastity Savage, but her best friend and co-author nixed the idea.

Though two of her books -- It Had to Be You and This Heart of Mine -- have football plots, Phillips doesn't consider herself much of a sports fan. "In my mind, if you don't have to wear mascara to do it, it doesn't count as recreation," she told Book Page.

Her family helps her keep the details straight. Husband Bill was her technical adviser on describing Dallie Beaudine's golf game in Fancy Pants, and son Zach's interest in knives, guns, and dead insects surfaced in Teddy, the son of the novel's leading lady. He also wrote and recorded a companion CD to her title This Heart of Mine, which is available from her web site.

Chapter One

Daisy Devreaux had forgotten her bridegroom's name.

"I, Theodosia, take thee..."

She caught her bottom lip between her teeth. Her father had introduced them several days ago, that terrible morning the three of them had gone to get the marriage license, and she'd heard the name then. Right afterward the man had disappeared, and she hadn't seen him again until a few minutes ago when she'd walked down the staircase of her father's Central Park West duplex into the living room where this makeshift midmorning wedding ceremony was taking place.

Her father stood behind her, and Daisy could almost feel him vibrating with disapproval, but his disapproval was nothing new. He'd been disappointed with her even before she was born, and no matter how hard she'd tried, she'd never been able to get him to change his mind.

She risked a sideways peek at this bridegroom her father's money had bought for her. A studinuffin. A very scary studmuffin with his towering height, lean, whipcord build, and those eerie amber eyes. Her mother would have loved him.

When Lani Devreaux had died in a yacht fire last year, she'd been in the arms of a twenty-four-year-old rock star. Daisy had finally reached the point where she could think about her mother without pain, and she smiled to herself as she realized that the man standing at her side would have been too old for her mother. He looked to be in his mid-thirties, and Lani had usually drawn the line at twenty-nine. His hair was so dark it was nearly black, and those chiseled features might have made his face too pretty if it weren't for his strong jaw, not to mention that intimidating scowl. Menwith such brutal good looks had appealed to Lani, but Daisy preferred older, more conservative types. Not for the first time since the ceremony had begun did she wish her father had picked someone less intimidating.

She tried to steady her nerves by reminding herself that she wasn't going to have to spend more than a few hours in her new husband's company. As soon as she had a chance to tell him her plan, this would all be over. Unfortunately, her plan also meant breaking the sacred marriage vows she was getting ready to take, and since she wasn't the sort of person who could take a vow lightly-especially a marriage vow-she suspected her guilty conscience had induced the memory block,

She started over again, hoping the name would poke through her mental barrier. "I, Theodosia, take thee.

Once again her voice trailed off.

Her bridegroom didn't even spare her a glance, let alone try to help her. He stared straight ahead, and the uncompromising lines of that hard profile made her skin prickle. He'd just spoken his own vows, so he must have mentioned his name, but the lack of inflection in his voice had escalated her emotional tailspin, and she hadn't taken it in.

"Alexander," her father spit out from behind her, and Daisy could tell by the sound of his voice that he was clenching his teeth again. For a man who had been one of the United States' foremost diplomats, he certainly didn't have much patience with her.

She dug her nails into her palms and told herself she had no choice. "I, Theodosia..." She gulped for air. "...take thee Alexander..." She gulped again. to be my awful wedded husband..."

It wasn't until she heard her stepmother, Amelia, gasp that she realized what she'd said.

The studmuffin turned his head and looked down at her.

He cocked one dark brow in a vaguely inquisitive fashion, as if he wasn't certain he'd heard her correctly. My awful wedded husband. Her sense of humor kicked in, and she felt the comers of her mouth quiver.

His brows slammed together and those deep-set eyes regarded her without a speck of amusement. Obviously the studmuffin didn't share her problem with inappropriate levity.

Swallowing the small bubble of hysteria that was rising inside her, she plunged on without correcting herself. At least that one part of her vows would be honest because he was certainly an awful husband for her. At that moment her mental block finally evaporated and his last name leaped into her mind. Markov. Alexander Markov. He was another of her father's Russians.

As a former ambassador to the Soviet Union, her father, Max Petroff, had close ties with the Russian community, both here and abroad. His passion for his ancestral homeland was even reflected in the decor of the room where they stood, with its bold blue walls, so common in that country's residential architecture; yellow-tiled stove; and multicolored kilim rug. To her left, a walnut cabinet held vases of Russian cobalt as well as crystal and porcelain pieces from the Imperial Works in St. Petersburg. The furniture was a mixture of art deco and eighteenth century that somehow worked.

Her bridegroom's large hand lifted her own much smaller one, and she felt its strength as he shoved a plain gold band on her finger.

"With this ring, I thee wed," he said in a stern, uncompromising voice.

She gazed at the simple band with momentary confusion. For as long as she could remember, she'd indulged in what her mother Lani had called a "bourgeois fantasy of love and marriage," and she'd never imagined anything like this.

    Someone should have proof-read the e-version - horrible mistakes

    As always, I really enjoyed another of SEP's books.

    HOWEVER, I was more than annoyed to spend money on an e-book that had so many mistakes in it - misspellings, wrong usage of words in the wrong places, and worst of all, sentences that started but didn't finish:

    "And Sheba'd turning into as big a ... as Daisy."

    using the word "us" instead of "his"

    Sentences ran together because they were missing commas, and I had to go back and re-read them till I figured out what they were supposed to say.

    I can't quote the sentences that ended in nothing - I'd be giving away the story.

    There were so many mistakes, it was difficult to read the book. Extremely disappointed!

    Touched by the angel

    It was 2001, it was the midterms and i'm on my junior year in college when I first read this book. I was floored by school work and i'm ready to scream. My classmate handed me her copy and said - take a break, read that. I opened the book for a reading before i went to bed and the next thing i know, i finished the book and it's already 4 am. Over the years, i've read all of SEP's works (and loved all of them, i might add) but Kiss an Angel has a special place in my heart, maybe because it's her first book that i've read.


    What more can I say? SEP rocks!

    I found myself getting totally absorbed in this storyline. It w

    I found myself getting totally absorbed in this storyline. It was in some ways a typical love story, but with the backdrop of the circus and the very entertaining characters,I just could not put the book down. I found Alex to be very mysterious. Wow, did I ever have a very strong visual image of him in my head! The romance between Alex and Daisy and how it developed was very steamy. As soon, as I finished the book, I started to read it all over again.

    What is it?

    Why is the male lead always so stinking mean to our girl in SEP books when she so clearly does not deserve it. I know it dors not last forever but it is still way too sad for me to feel happy about.

    Wonderful Read!

    This was a GREAT book! I simply could Not put it down! I wasn't really sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised that I was so engaged throughout the entire book! I fell in love with all of the characters. I am looking forward to reading another book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips! I will absolutely recommend this book to my friends!

    proof read please

    This was a cute, fast read but the grammar was horrible. Somone should have proofed this book before it was released. I was't looking for errors but found so many spelling mistakes and wrongbword usuages.

    BEST BOOK BY SEP!

    This is by far, the best book written by Ms. Phillips. It is intriguing and extremely funny. Yet, at the same time it touches a special place in your heart. The reader can really relate to both of the main characters, Alex and Daisy, as well as the secondary characters. The situations the main characters are placed in are comical, and you can feel the love they have for each other leaping off the pages. I cried, and let me tell you, I am not normally a book crier. It is a heart warming story and makes you want to find someone like Alex and give them a great big hug. Daisy may be flighty, but she is an intensely loving woman, and I'm sure everyone can relate to her. I love all of Ms. Phillip's books, but this is BY FAR THE BEST ONE! I've read it six times and it still hasn't gotten old.

    A Must Read!

    As the owner of ALL of SEP's books I encourage you to read this one if no other. First you laugh and then you cry, all the time marveling at the range of characters and circumstances that befall the main characters of Alex and Daisy. Such grit! Such charm! Such humor and just a hint of intrigue. This book, set against the backdrop of a circus is a pure fairy tale. When you start it be sure you have a few hours because you won't put it down. I have read this book 6 or 7 times (very unusual for me) and it delights me every time. If there were more stars in the rating I would still add additional ones. The author cleverly weaves several threads through the story which bring a number of emotions to the fore. You will LOVE this book.

    my first book of Susan Elizabeth Phillips

    i don't remember how many times i cried while reading this novel. i can't put it down. usually i read more of a sci-fi novels, or anything about vampires, angels or ghost. but this caught my attention. i read all the reviews about the book saying that this is one of her best, and it was. i'm 100% sure that they were all telling the truth. i've never been a fan of romance novel, maybe some but there is always some action on it or crime included, but this one makes me want to read some romancee novel eventhough it doesn't have anything to do with a crimie or vampires or angels.... the characters is so real, it's like a person jumping out of the page. it makes me cried a lot...and made me laugh! you should read this ^_^

    LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

    I bought this and finished it in 2 days! I will give NO details about the book as I hate spoilers of any kind, however, I love SEP she is quickly becoming one of my FAVORITE authors! I thought this book was a fabulous romance novel, and i HIGHLY recommend it! This is a book for entertainment not to be compared to real life...enjoy the escape!

    loved loved loved it!

    I read this book in about two days because I couldn't put it down! I just had to know what was going to happen next. This was a beautiful, innocent, and romantic novel. I'm even considering reading it again! I loved the fact that he hid his fortune from her so she wouldn't like him for his money. it was a great plot for a story and it was written beautifully. The intensity of their love and passion for eachother came to life. i felt like i was really there.

    My first and my favorite

    Enjoyed reading this romance because it was easy to remember characters, unusual setting, and ,most importantly, SEP did not keep repeating herself! Reading this book had me reading other books by her.

    my favorite

    i love love love this book. It is by far her best book. The romance is unbelievably sweet, and the characters are so well developed i felt like i was reading about real people. I cannot express how good this book is, but, it is about a reformed hero, so if you don't enjoy when the hero is mean to the heroine in the beginning of a book, it might not be for you. But read it anyways!!!!! You will love it.
