Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
DK's "Keep It Simple" approach works well for guitar novices. The basics of chords, keys, and scales are all here, along with a diagrammatic view of the guitar, directions for how to hold and finger the neck, tips for practicing, and a history of the instrument. Many of the featured pieces are well-known folk songs, but guitar tutor Burrows (Play Electric Guitar) also offers useful information for the advanced player, including approaches to performing, recording, and distributing one's own music. Internet sources are noted along the way. This is a worthy acquisition for all libraries. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

    Not a good choice

I believe that this book had a total of i think 3 chords. There was barely anything actually having to do with guitar playing it was all how to record and how to get played on the radio and by the end of it you are left with 3 chords and 20 bucks less

    Guitar for suckers

This book totaly sucked. It taught very little about actual playing and focused more on the materials needed to play.

    well kiss my grits

Of all the books in all the world, i had to pick this one. strong yet subtle proud but not arrogant sweet to the nose, yet sour to the tongue. If all in all is all we are, how can she say that i'm not all that??? Well, i guess the pendulum does swing both ways. but if she thinks that she's all that and a weekend pass, she's wrong. WRONG!!! Oh yeah, the book was pretty good. I give it 4 stars.

    Coffee Table Magic!!

The K.I.S.S. Guide to Playing Guitar is not only a full-color reference, it's simply the most enjoyable read-and-learn experience I've had in quite some while. I have played (self taught) for many years now, but this book has re-ignited my enthusiasm and appreciation for guitars. The book is all-encompassing; it includes a chapter on the history of guitars; it also addresses the following: what to look for in a guitar, how to tune a guitar, how to read music (although the chapter is not necessary to complete the book's teachings¿ it's a nice bonus), and of course, how to play the guitar. But wait, there's more! An audio CD that supports all related chapters is included and really helps to engage the student. There are reference points and special notes sprinkled throughout the book that apply to the different types of guitars and styles (e.g. electric and acoustic guitars, slide and finger-picking styles). When finally I flipped the cover over and eyed the retail price of this 352-page guide book + CD, my jaw dropped! This book is VERY inexpensive! Go buy K.I.S.S. Guide to Playing Guitar now and enjoy!

    Great Book!!!!

This book makes learning fun!! I had never picked up a guitar before, however it had been something that I had always wanted to do. I was somewhat intimidated when I first got it, and started to learn how many possible chord combinations there were. However, when I started reading the book, I forgot about how hard I thought it was going to be and just started playing. Terry Burrows definitely has taken time to make it easy for even the most novice beginner. Thanks to Terry!!!

I borrowed this book from my local library and it inspired me to buy it. I have been playing guitar for 10 years and picked up a guitar class and i use this as the recomended reading and the manditory teaching tool for my students. This is an excellet teaching tool for an instructor or a self-starter!

    Hasn't Put It Down!

I gave my husband this book for Christmas and he hasn't put it down! Layout, content, DK appeal is strong! Excellent book! Only one complaint: yesterday, the pages began to come out. And I know it hasn't been mishandled. I would have rated this one 5 stars if not for this point. It might be good to publish books such as the KISS guides with a coil binding to prevent such a disaster. Don't let this stop you from taking a look . . . just be aware.
