After rattling around the Prince's bedroom, it flies out the window and floats into the dark forest, where it has no business to be. The King decides to do something about it. He orders the Knight to climb on his horse, ride into the forest, and bring back the kiss. But the forest is filled with spooky things that frighten both the Knight and his horse. How will they ever succeed in bringing the kiss back to the castle? This funny story features Daivd Melling's atmospheric and richly colored illustrations on every page. It makes a great bedtime story for kids who are about the same age as the Little Prince. (Ages 4-7)

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"The humorous narrative, matched by the slightly goofy illustrations, delivers its message in a lighthearted way. "

Horn Book Guide, July-December 2002

"Readers will find both the text and the playful, color, cartoon illustrations amusing. Melling captures great expressions in his caricatures of the bewildered prince, the terrified knight and horse, and the gleeful royal family when the kiss is returned. The tale is refreshingly original and relevant, showing a busy family full of love.

PreS-Gr 2-A busy king hurriedly blows his son a goodnight kiss from the hallway, but it misses its target. Being a royal smooch with enchanting powers, it flies off on an adventure through a dark forest full of wild animals and is hotly pursued by a not-so-gallant young knight, who eventually finds himself face to face with an enormous dragon. However, the magical quality of the kiss tames even the wildest of creatures and when the shivering boy fears his demise, he is kissed rather than fried to a crisp. The knight catches the kiss and brings it safely home. Readers will find both the text and the playful, color, cartoon illustrations amusing. I love reading this book to my son. The wonderful illustrations keep the story light and fun. The story itself teaches that you should slow down and spend time with your family. Rushing things causes chaos in your life and the lives of everyone else.

We liked it as soon as we read it in the store, and more important, my 3-year-old boy does not tire of it. It has been one of the bedside choices for more than a year, and will be for some time to come. It has very nice and fun illustrations, a good picture to word ratio, and lots of action in the background. The words and illustrations complement each other, so it is easy for a child to help in the story-telling by adding his interpretation of what is happening. And there's nothing more important at bedtime than a good-night kiss.

This book was so much fun. The classes I read it to couldn't get enough of it. They didn't want me to turn the page until they all had a chance to see the wonderful, humorous artwork!

My 3 year old son has been inspired by this book, to slow down and give us a kiss each night. A delightful story that is beautifully illustrated and will have your children asking for it night after night.

Your youngsters will love this funny-and-magical-perfect-for-bedtime-tale! A distracted king blows his small son a kiss one night...but it misses! The kiss bounces its way through the story, soothing frowns and creating sunshine. Something new and fresh if you or your little one are tiring of Goodnight Moon and Guess How Much I Love You.
