Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In 1870 San Francisco, foundling Comfort Elizabeth Kennedy is mortified when her childhood friend, shipping magnate Bram DeLong, announces that they are engaged, but she plays along when he promises they can break it off soon. The sham engagement sets off a cascade of events ensnaring Comfort's affable banker uncles, Bram's imperious mother, and his older brother, Bode, whose decades-old passion for Comfort ignites as blackmailers, kidnappers, and a menacing figure from Comfort's shadowy past close in. While bestseller Goodman (Never Love a Lawman) struggles to free her narrative from a weighty beginning and a several overly convoluted plot threads, and cameos by a freed slave and a Chinese maid are unfortunately caricatured, the cast of likeable, articulate characters—including the complicated, independent, and altogether impressive heroine—makes this an entertaining and sizzling offering for lovers of Gilded Age pageantry. (Sept.)
Library Journal
Caught off guard when her best friend, Bram DeLong, unexpectedly announces their engagement, Comfort Kennedy is too stunned to object. But Bram's brother, Bode, knows something is wrong, and as he has loved Comfort for years, he's not about to let go of his suspicions. Danger, passion, and an ill-advised kidnapping are all part of this lively adventure that is a perfect read for fans of the West Coast Old West. VERDICT Deadly secrets that threaten the status quo, an enigma that is not easily resolved, and a well-matched pair of totally likable protagonists make this a romance to savor. Nicely done! Goodman (Marry Me) lives in West Virginia. [Previewed in "Booked Solid," LJ 7/11, p. 30.]

    Excellent Read!

This is the first book I have read from Jo Goodman. I really enjoyed the book. Comfort's "Uncles" had me laughing out loud. I did get a little confused in the beginning between Bram and Bode (which was which) but that's prob attributable to old age! LOL I really liked Bode, he was so "devoted" to Comfort without really letting her know it, I think she is too independent to have put up with much! I'm glad she finally came around to his way of thinking!

I truly enjoyed this book. The time period and the heroine made this a very good book. I wished that the brother of the hero in this had gotten more punishment.

    A must read

This is the best book I've read all year. You will fall in love with the relationship between Comfort and her "Uncles" Newt and Tuck. You will be shocked at the cruelty of our villains, and you will fall in love with our hero,Beau. If you're a fan of books that don't suck, read Kissing Comfort.

Kissing Comfort is an exciting Americana romance

In 1870 San Francisco, womanizing shipping mogul Bram DeLong announces that he and Comfort Elizabeth Kennedy are engaged. She is shocked by his announcement but Bram says to her afterward they will end their engagement soon. Comfort has not yet accepted.

Bram's older brother Bode comes home injured after an attack by the Rangers gang of thugs. Comfort helps him with his injuries but when he learns the woman he cherishes is marrying his brother, Bode leaves. She is disappointed in him and accepts Bram's proposal. However, Bode will not walk into the sunset without fighting for the woman he loves especially when her unknown heritage before she became a mute foundling begins to surface culminating with the Rangers kidnapping her.

Kissing Comfort is an exciting American romance starring two likable protagonists and an overall wonderful cast especially family though there is some stereotyping of tertiary characters. The intrepid title heroine makes the tale as her shrouded past may prove deadly while her hero would die for her. Fans will enjoy this fine historical as Bram's proposal sets in motion a comedy of errors that turns uncomfortably dangerous to the lead female.
