Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leah Hanson
What do I do when I'm finally kissed? What do I say afterwards? What if I hate it? Will I ever be kissed? For all those young girls who wonder about the ins and outs of kissing, this short guide (which promises "everything you've always wanted to know about kissing . . . and were afraid to ask") provides useful, honest, and often humorous advice. Schreibman goes beyond a simple question and answer format, giving young readers a history of kissing, insights into kissing customs around the world, anecdotes from other readers, stories of celebrity kisses and a "Your First Kiss" quiz. The varied content not only helps pre-teens with fears and frustrations, but also can extend their knowledge of an age-old custom. The author's honest voice, empathy and references to the realities of young people's lives gives this informational book a candid, friendly feel. Perhaps the only drawback to this guide is its constant reference to pop culture. With examples drawn from TV shows, movies, and celebrities of the 1990s, the book may inadvertently outdate itself with the passing of time.
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-This is just the kind of lighthearted guidebook that teens and preteens love to devour. Schreibman defines different types of kisses, a brief history of the act beginning with the ancient Romans, kissing games, humorous first-kiss memories from real girls and celebrities, an "Are You Ready to Kiss?" quiz, and lots more trivia on the subject. The author lets readers know that not everyone is ready to kiss at a certain age. The chapter on French kissing is especially good with its nonjudgmental attitude toward this "step beyond." Readers will appreciate the laid-back, breezy tone of the lively narrative. Kissing is a much better treatment of the topic than Caroline Plaisted's Love Lines (Element, 2000). Although there are no illustrations, this is a fun book on a popular topic.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
