Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This brief historical novel features nineyearold Kitt Kittredge and her family and friends as they struggle to make ends meet in the midst of the Great Depression. Kit's main struggles revolve around adjustments she must make since her Dad lost his job. Now she must help her mother who has, out of necessity, turned their family home into a boarding house. These adjustments also lead to problems at school as Kit's class prepares for Thanksgiving. The many realistic, blackandwhite drawings add to the book's visual appeal, while a "Peek into the Past" section combines teXt and old photos to show and tell young readers what schools were like in 1934. This is the second book in the latest series, "The American Girls Collection." 2000, Pleasant Company, $12.95 and $5.95. Ages 7 to 11. Reviewer: Gisela Jernigan <%ISBN%> 158485121X
From The Critics
The Depression Era has deeply affected the life of the newest "American Girl," Kit. Her family struggles with her father's loss of his business. Kit's creativity and strength of character play a major role as she learns an important Thanksgiving lesson. This story is highly recommended and would make a great gift. Part of the "American Girls Collection" series. 2000, Pleasant Company, $5.95. Ages 5 to 10. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-Set in Cincinnati, OH, during the Great Depression, these books introduce fourth-grade Kit. In Meet Kit, her father must close his car dealership and join the large number of unemployed. In an effort to make ends meet, her mother takes in boarders; Mrs. Howard and her son Stirling settle into Kit's newly redecorated bedroom, while the girl makes the best of her new space in the attic. In Kit Learns a Lesson, her older brother gets a job rather than attend college, and Kit helps her mother clean. Additional boarders have moved in and there is more work than ever. When a classmate's taunts lead to an altercation, Stirling, Kit, and her best friend are punished. They must deliver food collected by the students to the local soup kitchen, and Kit is shocked to see her father on line for lunch. Still, this is a somewhat idealized portrayal of the Depression. Full-page color illustrations and spot art appear throughout. Photos, reproductions, and explanations of the period follow in each of these transitional chapter books.-Debbie Feulner, Northwest Middle School, Greensboro, NC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

    Creative Solutions.

Some interesting facts are revealed when Kit makes a special delivery, what does Kit uncover? What solution does Kit discover when faced with a hard decision? This work of fiction has a great storyline that keeps readers intrigued and fascinated. Plenty of changes occur in Kit's life during the Great Depression in America, learn how she survived. *This novel is a great tale for leisure time reading and an easy way to learn some history through this book number 2, 1934 Kit Learns a Lesson: A School Story by Valerie Tripp. The other Kit novels in this series are good for enjoyment reading as well.
