Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Najika is an aspiring young chef with a flawless sense of taste and a heart of gold. Orphaned at a young age, Najika gravitated toward cooking out of her desire to find her "prince," the mysterious boy who touched her heart and brought light into her life shortly after her parents' death. The only clue to his identity is a silver spoon, which leads Najika to the prestigious Seika Academy, where she faces many challenges on her quest for happiness. Kitchen Princess uses many plot techniques traditionally found in shojo stories. Najika is cast as the lonely heroine, rejected and often humiliated by her peers, while two princes, brothers Sora and Daichi, both dote on her in their own ways. However, where many stories often take a fantastical twist, giving the heroine some kind of magical power that sets her apart, Kitchen Princess continues to develop Najika's cooking abilities, which she uses to reach out to her classmates. This adds a spicy twist to the story, making an old recipe feel fresh and tasty. Ando's art style is romantic and whimsical, making for a delicious start to Najika's story. (Feb.) Cute and endearing

This is an adorable book and I love it. I've read all 6 so far and I am eagerly awaiting book 7 that comes out in early August. It is an early teen's love story, and hits your heart very quickly. The characters are drawn quite well, simple and eye catching. Though it is not drawn in extreme detail, it is more meant for early/pre teens I would assume. I'm 19, but it still appeals to me. If anyone is looking for a cute little book, I would definitely recommend this one.

I read this series on a whim; I was really into cooking at one point. It is cute and fun, just pure enjoyable reading. I was delighted to find out that there are even recipes for what she makes in the back! I am totally going to try them.

Najika reminded me a lot of the Fruits Basket character Tohru Honda, having a love of life and everyone/everything around her even though tragedy has clouded her past. Najika is selfless and always that first one to offer a helping hand.

I also like how this manga has a direction of where it is going and a direction for the characters to take. They know what path they want to go and what goals they are searching for. It is one of those manga stories that seems to be really inspirational to me and inspires me to go and try to find out what I want to do with my life.

I would rate it less if the was an even lower star...

I saw this in a manga add and thought that it would be very intersting... boy was I wrong.... This is quie an orginal story yet slightly diffrent, which is the only good point to the book if you ask me, but... the plot is sort of lame... one girl with no talents must make her way in a school full of talented people trying to find her one true love which had opened up her heart the day her parents died.... sigh... of corse there are two brothers which fight all the time but notice something special inside of this one girl! GASP! And only of them can be her magical prince! LAME!!!!!!!! The plot and the story line are so typical and obvious it nearly made me choke! So stay away from this book! I wrote this so I could spare you from the suffering in which I endured by reading the whole book....'I have no idea why I did' I also read who her true love was, which is in like the 5th or 6th book, and that detail is pretty obvious too.... So save your from the from the sickness of lameness before it poisons your brain!

    Mindless Fluff

Kitchen Princess is mindless shoujo fluff from cover-to-cover. This is NOT why I'm giving this a low rating while one should not read this sort of thing all the time, sometimes you're simply in the mood to read something purely fun and not have to think. The reason I'm giving this a low rating is because Kitchen Princess isn't even enjoyable mindless fluff. The main girl in the story has no personality whatsoever and has only one character trait she likes to cook. That's it. The two possible love interests for said girl only serve one purporse: to look cool, and bring their faces too close to the heroine's for no particular reason other than so that the heroine can blush all cutely, and so that the other girls in the story can get all jealous and be cold to the heroine. Everything is extremely predictable, and there is absolutely nothing original about this manga at all. Take the art, for example. The art isn't bad, it's just too...average. If you have even read one other shoujo manga, you have seen this exact art style before. This story has been done ten-million times before, too. Girl gets into a prestigous school where she everyone is mean to her, TM, but she has a kind heart, TM, and she is looking for a boy she met in her childhood, TM, and her only talent is cooking, TM. The story isn't bad, it's just so predictable that reading the manga is boring, and it's been done so friggin' many times before even if you've never read any other manga before, you know exactly how everything will end up within the first few chapters. So, bottom line is, even if all you're looking for is shoujo romance fluff, look elsewhere. You can do better.
