Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathryn Erskine
Number 8 in the "Jack Russell: Dog Detective" series tells the story of a cat-napping, as in a kidnapping, investigation. Jack Russell must pull himself away from solving his friends' problems and training them long enough to rally their support and figure out what has happened to his old cat nemesis. Readers of this series will no doubt love another adventure of the scampering dynamic dog detectives. There may be some early readers who could find the play on words difficult to follow—"dogwash" for nonsense, "pawplexed" for perplexed, "ig-claw" for ignore—and such cleverness may sometimes be lost on them unless it is read out loud by an adult. However, those secure enough in their reading ability will enjoy the dog language. Jack's glossaries at the end of each chapter explain the terminology. The pen-and-ink illustrations are fun and help readers understand the story. The illustrated maps and lists will assist children in their reading. Reviewer: Kathryn Erskine
