It's a bright spring day in the farmyard and Kitten is meeting all sorts of animals and their young, including frogs and tadpoles, owls and owlets and many more. In this first book in the Kitten series, rhyming couplets capture the animals' sounds and actions, making it a fantastic interactive read-aloud. Young readers will enjoy mimicking animal sounds, picking out seasonal details in the exquisite mixed-media art and searching for and finding Kitten on every page.

The Kitten series follows a lovable feline around the farmyard over the course of one day as she encounters different animals. Each title in the four-book series is set in a different season.

Kirkus Reviews
"Morning hums, / Kitten listens." A calico kitten spends a spring day romping through the countryside and the farmyard. "Chicken clucks, / Chick scratches. / Duck quacks, / Duckling hatches." Kitten chases a puppy and spies a swallow. She plays hide-and-seek with a mousie and laps milk with a piglet. She watches an owlet have dinner and a lamb take its first steps. Until "Evening whispers, / Moonlight beams. / Door opens, / Kitten dreams." Canadian author and illustrator Fernandes outdoes herself with this simple series kick-off; the self-hardening-clay-and-mixed-media collage spot and full-bleed illustrations are intricate and adorably three-dimensional. For cat lovers, the kitten asleep, belly-up, on the final page will be worth the price of admission. Animals mentioned in the spare rhyming text are only a few of Kitten's playmates. Storytimers and lap-sitters will enjoy naming the familiar feathered and furred faces and mimicking their sounds. Kitten also likes to hide, making this an interactive read sure to please the youngest farm fans. (Picture book. 1-4)
Children's Literature - Debby Willett
The sun is shining on the farm, and kitten goes exploring. There is so much to see and hear this morning. First kitten listens to the song of a hummingbird and the buzz of a bee. As kitten goes along, there is a frog and a bird leaving her nest, yet there is so much more to see. Kitten plays chase with the dog and hears the chicken clucking with her chick. The farm is full of things to see and hear! There are still ducks, cows, pigs, and so much more for kitten to see and hear. The illustrations are colorful, almost appearing to be three-dimensional. Each page is full of things to see, in addition to the text. Fernandes does an excellent job creating a book that will appeal to young readers beyond just the initial story line. They will find much to look for on the pages of this very colorful and fun read. Reviewer: Debby Willett

PreS—It is spring on the farm, and Kitten is out exploring and visiting the new babies. The feline sees the bees on the flowers, the redwing blackbird by its nest, a chick, a duckling hatching, and more. At the end of a busy day, the cat returns to a house and settles down for a night of sweet dreams. The text and the mixed-media illustrations are at times inconsistent with what is described and portrayed, e.g., "Frog croaks,/Tadpole glistens" shows the pair, but the tadpole does not "glisten." A few pages later, "Pig oinks,/Piglet drinks." Directly below the text, Kitten is lapping milk from a bowl, while on the left-hand side of the spread a piglet is shown nursing. The illustrations are filled with delightful images and the brief text will appeal to the very young.—Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH
