Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Interacting with a pet, as with any friend, needs to be learned. In this book, which is subtitled 50 Ways to Make Friends With Your Kitten, Bessant poses such questions such as "What do kittens need for Christmas?" Her answer: A nice affordable cardboard box. While not an instruction manual, this book provides ideas of what is fun for the kitty, and therefore what will be fun for the child playing with the kitty. "Make a tent out of newspapers," Bessant suggests on one page, explaining how to fold the newspaper. "Gently brush his [the kitten's] head with an old, soft toothbrush" And most importantly, learn how to pay attention to your pet. "Observe your pet very carefully and guess when something catches his attention by watching his body language." With black-and-white drawings showing kittens at play, this book could be very empowering for a young reader getting a kitten for the first time. No need to ask mom how to act, the book explains.
