Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Kane creates a book parents will swear they read as a child . . . an aggressively retro kitty-care manual for the youngest feline aficionados." - Kirkus Reviews
Children's Literature - M.H.B. Hughes
Anyone knowing a little redheaded girl should buy this picture book for her. A charming old-fashioned take on the everyday girl-and-cat story, the verses are sweet, but not cloying (although the text could have used more originality and humor). Author and illustrator Kane’s long and career began in comics, but continued through twenty-five picture books, including Little Mommy, which was reissued as a Little Golden Book” classic. (Older “Little Golden Books” have increasing value as collectibles, some now worth sizable sums.) It’s no surprise that Kane is a portraitist, as realized in the loving rendering of the young lady and her fine feline. Animal bodies can be difficult to portray with accuracy, leading many illustrators toward the cartoon, but nothing cartoonish mars this cat’s career. With no “angry cat” distortion of the face, a subtle transition of expression appears as play merges into Pussy’s leap at a hapless bug, showing the determination of a steeplechase horse. While mainly a bedtime book, Kitty and Me may remain on the shelf after other books are given away. Charming rather than beautiful, retro conquers dated, making Kitty feels classic. Old-fashioned books are an enduring joy to read aloud, mostly because they lend reassurance to adults, but all little girls would want to imagine themselves in this story. Reviewer: M.H.B. Hughes; Ages 3 to 6.

K-Gr 2—Through rhyming text, Kane explores the day-to-day activities and building relationship between a girl and her kitten. The book touches on kitten habits such as grooming, snoozing, and exploring. However, as the nameless narrator takes readers through the story, she focuses on one task at a time, and the text becomes rather monotonous. There is no real climax or plot building here, and many children will lose interest by the middle. The illustrations, done in pencil, watercolor, and colored pencil, are reminiscent of 1990s picture books that have long since lost their shine and are not striking enough to combat the lackluster elements of the story. An additional purchase at best.—Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI
Kirkus Reviews
"I love Kitty and Kitty loves me. / He comes when I call him…usually." A little Caucasian girl explains her special relationship with her kitten, their daily routines, games and adventures. "In the morning while I'm still in bed, / He jumps on my pillow and pats my head." She gently returns the affection. They move on to play: "He rolls and tumbles as he plays; / I giggle and laugh at his funny ways." Sometimes he scratches and earns a scolding, but she's always gentle. He likes to go outside to pounce on bugs, scratch trees and startle birds. Once he was scared by a dog, and his little girl saved him. They love each other, "[a]nd that's the way it will always be." A veteran writer/illustrator of Little Golden Books and other offerings for young listeners, Kane creates a book parents will swear they read as a child. From the creamy gray color of the paper to the vintage, timeless pencil-and-watercolor illustrations to the simple rhyming text, the whole is free of technology and topical language. The girl and the kitten are drawn realistically (if rather woodenly), as is their sweet relationship. An aggressively retro kitty-care manual for the youngest feline aficionados. (Picture book. 3-6)
