A little while later, Luke and Xavier returned, thankfully, without any dogs OR Leo. I stood up, welcoming them with the others and smiling broadly.
"What happened?" Victoria asked, one eyebrow raised and a curious look in her brown eyes.
"Hunters," Luke said quietly, his voice low.
I froze. Hunters?!
"We hid in a tree," Xavier explained, looking around. "They didn't see us, and they took the dogs with them."
"Thank goodness you weren't caught!" Dragomir said, looking relieved. "Just imagine…" He shuddered.
"Where's Leo?" Jatari asked, sounding concerned. Her worry baffled me—hadn't she been furious with Leo not too long before?
"He didn't meet us," Luke said, looking puzzled.
"I'll go look for him," Jatari said quickly, and, before anyone could object, she snatched a bow and quiver of arrows down from the hut's wall.
"It's getting dark out!" Victoria protested.
"I know," Jatari replied, heading for the door. "I'll find him."
"And we'll start cooking," Terra grumbled, standing up. "I'd better go fetch that deer."
Xavier and Terra headed for the storage-hut, and Jatari headed for the rope bridge.
"Good luck!" I called after her.
She nodded stiffly, before vanishing into the growing darkness.
Suddenly, Luke turned to me, his blue gaze stern.
"Leiyra, do you know anything of a Resistance?" Luke asked, sounding worried and serious at the same time.
I frowned. "I've heard rumors, yah. Why?"
"What is it?" Luke pressed.
"Well," I began awkwardly, glancing around at the curious faces. "The Resistance is a small group of rebels that are planning to take down the... Shades. Sometimes they'll attack Hunters and their hounds… raid war houses… stuff like that. There hasn't been a full scale battle yet, though."
"So they're… rebels?" Luke questioned.
I looked at him, confused. "You haven't heard of the Resistance? I mean, they're practically everywhere! Resistance this, resistance that… the Shades are obsessed with finding their hideout, but it's rumored that they're constantly moving, so they can't befound," I said.
"Thanks Leiyra," Luke said, looking away and turning towards the window. "That makes sense now…"
"Wha'd you mean?" I asked.
"One of the Hunters mentioned it," he replied. "Do you know anything about the Wishbone, either?"
I shivered. "No, not really," I said.
"What about Skorne?"
I froze. "S-skorne?"
"Yes, Skorne," Luke repeated. "You know, leader of the Shades? You must have heard of him."
"Of course," I said. "It's just… anyone who wasn't part of the army was not allowed to use his name. We just had to call him the Leader."
"Oh," Dragomir said shortly.
Terra and Xavier suddenly returned, the deer split between them, which they laid on the ground. "Sorry we took so long!" Xavier panted, grinning. "It was kind of dark in there."
Terra rolled her eyes. "Kind of? You mean, pitch-black-can't-see-your-own-nose dark?"
"I hope Jatari's okay," I murmured.
"She'll be back soon," Victoria promised. "Come on, Dragomir, let's go fetch some wood."
"Wood?" I echoed, stupified.
"Yah, to cook it," Terra said, looking pointedly at me.
"But… won't the hut burn down?" I asked.
"We're careful," she replied, looking away and twirling a strand of golden red hair in her fingers.
I glared at her.
