Overview

If you had to pick a guide to the wild and wooly world of the Yiddish experience in America, you could do far worse than Henry Sapoznik. Producer of this chronological guide to klezmer and the companion book of the same name -- as well as an accomplished musician in his own right -- Sapoznik knows the terrain. From the early -- 1912! -- recordings that open this disc to the digitally recorded avant-klez that closes it, he covers seemingly every hill and dale, presenting a who's who of the music. You'll want the book to understand the shifts that the compilation makes from cantor Yoselle Rosenblatt to the Original Dixieland Jazz Band to the recognizable klezmer of Abe Schwartz's orchestra (the notes are scant), but the music is enjoyable enough. Throw in big-band arrangements ("Di Rayze Nukh Amerika" boasts a mallets solo) and the heady experiments of the late '80s klez revival (Boiled in Lead's guitar-crunching "Sher," the Klezmatics' fast 'n' furious "Man in a Hat"), and the journey from OLD WORLD TO OUR WORLD is a relentlessly entertaining one. This disc is sure to inspire many side trips down the roads of klezmer past and present. Mark Schwartz

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
This is the companion CD to the critically acclaimed book of the same title published by MacMillan which traces the development of Klezmer music through the 19th and 20th centuries. A fine collection of music was selected for this compilation, reflecting the development of the Klezmer style as a purely Eastern European Jewish form to a truly international style of music that absorbed the influence of jazz, pop music, and even punk.
