Eisenstoffwechselstörungen, insbesondere der Eisenmangel, zählen zu den am häufigsten übersehenen oder fehlgedeuteten Erkrankungen. Anämien sind ein weltweites Problem. Davon betroffen sind vor allem ältere Menschen. Nach den WHO-Kriterien (World Health Organisation. Nutritional anemias. Technical Reports Series 1992; 503) spricht eine Hb-Konzentration <12g/dl bei der Frau und <13g/dl beim Mann für eine Anämie. Danach haben 10–22 % der Frauen und 6–30 % der Männer älter als 65 Jahre eine Anämie.
Darüber hinaus haben neue Erkenntnisse über den Gendefekt der Hämochromatose sowie über die Folgen der Eisenüberladung dazu geführt, diesen bisher unterschätzten Problemen mehr Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken.
Die Diagnostik – und insbesondere die Therapie der Anämien – haben in den letzten Jahren derartige Fortschritte gebracht, die nahelegen, die Therapie und das diagnostische Spektrum zu erweitern. Die starke Nachfrage macht eine siebente, erweiterte Auflage notwendig.
