In der letzten Zeit sind immer wieder Meldungen von der Erkrankung einiger berühmter Persönlichkeiten durch die Presse gegangen. Wie viel Unverständnis und Unkenntnis jedoch in bezug auf diese Krankheit vorherrscht, zeigt ein Kommentar von Karsten Spengemann, RTL TV-Moderator, der sich wie folgt zu der Erkrankung des FC Bayern München Spielers Sebastian Deissler äußerte: „Es ist bedauerlich, dass man in unserer Gesellschaft, in der man doch eigentlich alles hat, noch an Depressionen erkrankt."
Depression wird immer noch leichtfertig als ein „Nicht wollen" abgetan. Dass es sich bei den Betroffenen aber um ein „Nicht können" handelt und dass ihre Untätigkeit keineswegs auf Unlust oder gar Faulheit beruht, ist vielen Gesunden nicht klar.
Es herrscht also noch viel Aufklärungsbedarf, damit Depression von allen, den Betroffenen selbst, deren Angehörigen und auch von Ärzten, als diese erkannt und behandelt werden kann.
