Klunky Monkey, New Kid in Classby Robert Kraus
When new student Klunky Monkey's constant sharing of his bananas makes all the animals in school grow chunky like him, Miss Gator begins a shape-up program for everyone.
School Library Journal - School Library JournalPreS-Gr 2-- Considerable improvements over Kraus's Here Comes Tardy Toad and Buggy Bear Cleans Up (both Silver Pr, 1989). These new books lack the strong didactic element found in the earlier titles. Klunky is a chunky little monkey who shows up at Miss Gator's classroom. At first the other animal children make fun of him, but they are soon friends. Squirmy the worm lives in the apple on Miss Gator's desk, and often cleans the classroom at night. When Miss Gator discovers who the mysterious helper is, she introduces him to the children. These rather uneventful stories are illustrated with amateurish pen-and-ink sketches washed in watercolor. Several titles in the ``Hello Reading!'' series (Bantam) will surpass them; many books in the ``Rookie Reader'' (Childrens) and ``I Can Read'' series (Harper) are far superior. Kraus's books, however, will fill some corners in collections that need a wide variety of easy-to-read material. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA
