Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Seventeen writers immortalize the legendary knight in one song and 14 tales that range in style from serious to sublime to silly. "Rodergo's Song," kicks off the collection and sets the tone for the book. Those who can read music will be treated to a powerful and dramatic melody as well. Among the standouts that follow are "Squire Thorian's Trial" by Mickey Aucker Reichart, which calls into question the true worth of a knight; the laugh-out-loud funny "Nights of the Round Table" by Tanya Huff, in which the reader learns who really calls the shots in King Arthur's court; and Jean Rabe's "Buried Treasure," a somber and haunting tale of one of the last Templar Knights. "In a Lifetime" is a shimmering, poignant story of love and loyalty by Kristin Schwengel, while Rosemary Edghill and India Edghill give a noir twist to "Killer in the Reign." Esther Friesner is clearly channeling Monty Python in "Days of Old" and Nina Kiriki Hoffman offers a curious cast of heroes in "Faint Heart, Foul Lady." A few of the stories don't read as smoothly as others, but overall, this cohesive collection in a popular series of anthologies is well suited to larger high school and public libraries. From Andre Norton's poignant tale of the last surviving Templar and the choice he must make to live or die ("Red Cross, White Cross") to Josepha Sherman's fanciful story of a young knight and his most unusual steed ("Knight Mare"), the 14 stories (and one song) in this collection chronicle the feats and follies of the brotherhood of knights. Contributions from veteran authors including Niki Kiriki Hoffman, Jean Rabe, Brendan DuBois, and Tanya Huff provide a varied and always intriguing look at a legendary time of romance, violence, and, above all, honor. For most fantasy collections. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
