Overview

"A Knight of the White Cross, a Tale of the Siege of Rhodes," by G. A. Henty is another volume for which we have more stirring tales of adventure, set as usual amid historical surroundings.

Young Gervaise Tresham was the son of a Knight who, supporting Warwick the King-maker, took part in the Battle of Barnet. Warwick lost the battle and his life, and the Treshams went west to meet Queen Margaret. Gervaise was fired with a desire to be a soldier, and, owing to his father's influence, he was enabled to join the celebrated Order of the Knights of St. John. He proceeded to Rhodes, and became a page in the household of the Grand Master of the Order. Later he took part in a terrible fight with pirates, and for the valor he displayed was made a Knight of the Order. Then, in command of a war-galley, he destroyed a fleet of Moorish corsairs, but was subsequently captured and sold into slavery. After some terrible experiences, he made good his escape, and returned to Rhodes in time to take part in the defense of the fortress against the Turks. The tale, as will be seen from this brief outline, affords the author ample opportunity to deal in exciting situations.
