Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Over the years youngsters with an interest in soldiers have often been fascinated by thoughts and images of medieval knights. These armor plated fighting men, often astride similarly armored horses, seem strangely fascinating in their aspects. Clanking into combat armed with weapons of steel, the medieval knight was a menacing force on the battlefield. Alongside the armaments, training, and tactics of knights there also was the fascinating culture of chivalric behavior that emerged over time and shaped their actions. These individual tank-like fighting men are the subject of this volume in the illustrated Legendary Warriors series. Writer Adrienne Lee does a capable job of capturing critical aspects of their history while using very few words. A sparse text is linked to numerous colorful images of knights.Together they paint a fairly vivid picture of their daily life. Of particular interest are the factors that eventually led to knights being superseded on the battlefield. As Lee points out, the emergence of massed armies of pikemen, the long bow, and then the development of gunpowder all were the death knells for the knight as a significant force on the battlefield. However as the author of this high interest book points out, the fact that knights continue to fascinate people makes them justly the focus of continued study. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
