Overview

From the battlefields of Flanders, to the banquet halls of the great English manor houses, this gloriously appointed book offers page after page of splendorous illustration and information. Everything a young person could want to know about knights is included: shields, scutcheons, jousts, castles, sieges, chivalry and fearless steeds, all depicted in a colorful abundance of detailed battlescapes, scenarios and maps. Topics include the knight's place in feudal society, how he trained for war, his code of honor, heraldry and armor, and famous battles; knights' popular companions including the various types of horses — chargers, palfreys, hackneys — and other animals such as mastiffs and carrier pigeons that accompanied them on campaigns; knights in other cultures — Sioux braves and Polish lancers in the West to Japanese samurai in the East — and the knight of medieval romances and today's blockbuster films. The knight in shining armor may have disappeared from the battlefield, but rides on in an ageless fascination shared by children and people of all ages. Includes an illustrated glossary and index.

Tells about the lives of knights throughout history while focusing on those of medieval times.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Knights and their armor, weapons, code of honor and a lot more are addressed in this oversized book. Steele takes readers on a trip back to the medieval world and briefly describes the life of the time as well as the great number of entities vying for power. The pictures contain as much information as the text, which will make this book attractive to kids who may not be strong readers. The spread showing a knight's household is filled with details, and even the toilet facilities are labeled. Pictures of extant castles are interspersed with drawings and other illustrations to give readers a real feel for the scale and massiveness of these fortresses. After nearly a thousand years, the age of knighthood finally came to an end. However, tales of chivalry and fascination with real knights and their deeds is still much in evidence today as demonstrated by the popularity of the musical Camelot and contemporary films such as Braveheart. The concluding pages offer brief biographies of knights and knaves and there is an index and a glossary.
