    Caution!

The concept of collecting data from all the Fallschirmjägers into one book is briliant. There are many unknown Knights Cross winners, who previously have been omitted from WWII literature, who are given their due respect through this book. Having said that, I must admit to have been somewhat disappointed with the book. The quality of the photos is not good, and I think more care could have been put into the selection process. But far worse is the text which is littered with mistakes and factural errors. So much so, that I would warn anybody for relying solely on this book as a source. Everything in it has to be supported by another source to make sure, that the data is correct. I would give but a few exaples: 1) Peter Arent is totally omitted, 2) Helmuth Arpke: It says in the book that he recieved the KC the same day he was KIA on the 16-1-1942. He was indeed KIA on the 16-1-42, but he recieved the KC on the 13-5-40 as part of 'Sturmabteilung Koch', 2) Karl Heinz Becker recieved his German Cross in Gold on the 29-6-44 and not the 19-6-44, 3) Erich Beine recieved the KC on the 5-9-44 and not the 18-11-44 4) Rudolf Berneike is omitted 5)Rudolf Donth: According to the book, he was born in 1930, but joined the Wehrmacht in 1939!! Furthermore it does note state which date he was awarded the Knights Cross (14-1-1945) even though it is the subject/matter of the book. And I could go on with many more factual errors which in my opinion detracts from an otherwise brilliant idea. It is a good bedside read, because of the anecdotes, but any historians would be well adviced to be very cautious in relying solely on the information in this book.

    Great Book

The reason i love these books is because the average soldier's story is told, soldiers who would otherwise never have had their story told. Each soldier is also shown in a photograph, although a couple are not for some reason. But all three of Franz Kurowski's 'Knights of the Wehrmacht' books are worth every penny. Other than Fallshirmjager, there are Afrika Korps and U-Boat Service.
