Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
The beautiful cover offers a hint of the fabulous projects contained in this well-illustrated guide to incorporating beads into knitted projects. The full color photographs are detailed and make the clear instructions easy to follow. Durant includes the basics of getting started and moves along to actual patterns that give all of the materials needed, as well as suggestions for modifying the original designs. Trouble shooting tips are invaluable as she notes typical mistakes and how to correct them without having to abandon the project. Each section is preceded with an introduction about where the technique originated or some aspect of using the various methods. I am particularly fond of the "Hook Bead Knitting" section because it does not require pre-stringing beads; I love the fast start and immediate results. The chapters include: "Tools and Techniques," "Bead Knitting," "Beaded Knitting," "Slipstitch Bead Knitting" (also a favorite of mine), "Carry-Along Bead Knitting," "Hook Bead Knitting," and "Putting It All Together." The author has a long background in "professional" knitting and has had a column in Beadwork for a number of years. The inclusion of historical tidbits and factoids about materials make this instruction book fun to use, while the ring binding makes it easy to use while actually working. Back matter includes information about the abbreviations used, bead sizes, a glossary, bibliography, resources for materials, and a detailed index. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan

    A must for bead work

This is a great book to add to your knitting library. The many different techniques for adding beads to projects are well explained complete with photos. The author gives a comprehensive overview of beads, sizing, and the types of beads to avoid problems. The projects range from simple to complex, however the techniques for the complex projects could be used on a simpler design of your own.
