Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Inspired by her love of knitting and haiku, Fire has written about using both to compliment creativity, meditation, and contemplation. The repetitive rhythms of knitting are the perfect accompaniment for mind-freeing relaxation; simple stitches and practice sessions give the brain time to explore its vast expanses. She also considers that, when knitting for others, the activity itself becomes "heart centered," and allows the heart to know all of the "unsaid thoughts" that are woven between the stitches. Her philosophy of life is interwoven in the text and poetry: "yarn looping in yarn, tactile and magical, like two sticks make a fire." While in mourning for her mother, the author (already an accomplished knitter) began to read and write haiku: "The glide of my hands/In my knitting I am free/It is my ocean." Finding solace in the familiar patterns, the focused activity inspired her to combine the haiku and knitting into a book for anyone who loves to knit and seeks to find "focus, patience, and presence in a baffling world of suffering and delight." She also discusses praying while knitting so that the work "covers those you love with love disguised as a shawl (or whatever)." Her reflections on life and knitting are bound seamlessly into this book of inspiration, making it quite suitable for a gift book or an addition to the body of knitting books that have become so popular of late.
