Overview

Featuring small projects that are perfect for the beginning knitter, this book covers how to make modular squares that can be connected to create a variety of eye-catching designs. Including wearable designs and accessories--from capelets, hats, and scarves to bags, pillows, and quilts--these projects involve relatively few stitches, can be completed in a short amount of time, and are perfect for using up small amounts of leftover yarn. The modular domino squares can be combined in an infinite number of ways to create a wide variety of patterns, and mitered squares can be connected to achieve a patchwork effect similar to traditional quilts. Most of the projects are made with wool yarn knitted at a slightly looser gauge than recommended by the manufacturer so that the finished piece can be felted in the washing machine, creating unique and contemporary looks.

Scandinavian knitwear designer HA¸xbro (Domino Knitting) presents another collection of eye-catching and colorful modular knitting patterns. Modular knits are constructed out of small blocks of knitting, which can then be connected in a variety of ways. The book begins with knits constructed out of single blocks, followed by knits constructed out of multiple blocks arranged into specific shapes. Modular knitwear isn't just square or rectangular-it can be combined into a number of different shapes, as HA¸xbro demonstrates with patterns for modular knitted booties and hats. This technique isn't for everyone, but for those who enjoy modular knitting, any new pattern by HA¸xbro is a special treat. Recommended for libraries where similar titles are popular.

I was intrigued by the look of the finished projects using the domino knitting technique. The book has a range of interesting and contemporary patterns, good descriptions and is well organized. The yarn called for is easy to substitute. I have not knit any of the patterns yet, but plan to after the holidays. Good book for inspiration and the challenge of learning somehting new.
