Overview

For as long as women have been knitting, they’ve been knitting garments for men—only to have men hide their lovingly created pieces in drawers and closets. Men aren’t being intentionally cruel; they’re just not comfortable in knitwear made with bright colors, itchy yarn, or flashy designs.
So what’s a knitter to do? Understand the male psyche, says knitting instructor Bruce Weinstein. In Knits Men Wan he presents ten hilarious essays, each based on a rule that helps women knit for men successfully. “Men Are Babies” explains why guys need to wear soft fabrics. “Men Hate Fittings” describes how to create a sweater based on one that’s in his wardrobe. Following each essay is a timeless master pattern, from socks, hats, and scarves to an array of sweaters, all in a range of sizes and most written for multiple gauges. With this book in hand, women finally have the secret to knitting garments that men will appreciate and actually wear.

Baseball jersey had so many errors and still no errata anywhere.  So much time lost fixing the sleeves!  Come on people!

    Too small!

Half of the text in this book is contained in VERY small images which makes it nearly impossible to follow a pattern on a small screen. Worthless!

    SImple patterns, lots of options

Knits Men Want is full of patterns which then men in my life would in fact wear. (Except for the fingerless mitts.) The patterns are all quite simple- no frills or drama. For guys who like blue, grey, and lots of stockinette stitch, this is a good find.

In my opinion, the best thing about this book is that each pattern is written for multiple gauges and sizes. This is great because it's not always easy to find a good, manly yarn in exactly the color and gauge you need to knit something a guy will actually wear. Every pattern is very adaptable, and also has the yarn and needle info that was used to make the garments in the photos.

Knits My Man Did Not Want

Unfortunately, this book did not meet my needs. Or catch the attention of my husband. My husband has been patiently hinting for something hand knit, so I bought this book for him to pick something out. Many of the patterns were not what a midwesterner man would wear, in my opionion. The book was well illustrated and had many clever chapter headings, but the content was weak. My husband either rolled his eyes or laughed at the patterns offered. The only pattern that intrigued me was the reversible cable scarf, but it was not enough to convince me to keep the book. I ended up returning the book to Barnes and Noble.
