Editorial Reviews

Ilene Cooper
"Comprehensive" is the word to describe this compendium of knitting techniques. Even experienced knitters will learn things they never knew: various methods of holding the needles, counting stitches, and casting on 40 of those, in fact. That's what makes this book so special: not only is it written clearly enough for beginners to understand, but the infinite variations it offers prove that there is always something more to learn about the craft. Gauge charts and pattern instructions are supplied, and finishing touches, such as buttonholes, edging, and embroidery, are addressed effectively. The techniques are illustrated with two-color charts, and finished products and materials are displayed on 32 pages of colorplates. An excellent reference source.

    A must have knitters resource!

This wonderful book has been around since 1986 and has been updated, but much of it's information is still brand new for knitters. It contains a wealth of ways to do almost anything knitterly. I was a little shocked when I opened this for the first time. After all, even though I wasn't all that experienced I'd been on excellent knitting discussion lists for a few years, read blogs, knitted in groups and thought I'd heard all the esoteric tips and tricks. BUT consider this from part two: How many cast on's do YOU know? 4 or 5 might be a lot. The 'Cast On' section, from Part two, starts with 'choosing a cast on' and suggests many for each category. Each cast on has excellent written directions coupled with a clear illustration. Have you heard of a 'pin hole cast on,' how about a 'Peruvian chain cast on' or a 'twice knitted cast on?' Many cast on's have multiple variations for example, 'tubular cast on', 'two stranded tubular cast on', 'yarn over tubular cast on' and there are 2 more. I got tired of counting when I hit about 45. Yes, read that again, MORE than 45 cast on variations! Now how about bind off's? Book contents page: Introduction How to use this book Part one: Basics Part two: Get clicking Part three: Final touches Part four: Pattern instructions Part five: Help! Gauge charts Index So, even if you too have been around knitting for quite awhile I'm positive you will learn so much from this informative and invaluable book. It's simply not to be missed as truly, truly, this is a must have resource for EVERY knitter! Buy this one you will use it over and over again!

    Wonderful Resource!

I have been knitting for years but occassionally come across special cast ons, bind offs, and other techniques that I am not familiar with. This book is very comprehensive and has been a real treasure to have on hand when I encounter a reference to a new technique or just to learn more about something. Well worth the cost. Great illustrations!

    I Also Recommend:

    Good reference

A good basic reference book for knitting, shows various ways of doing things (I never knew there were so many difference ways to cast on). Some of it can be confusing - I couldn't understand Kitchener stitch/grafting as explained in this book (they want you to take your knitting off the needles!) and had to use other resources. I wouldn't recommend using this book as your only knitting reference book, but as a supplemental reference.

    A knitter's Must Have!

Wether your a beginner or a well-versed knitter, this handbook is a must. When I came across this book in the store I was astonished at the amount of information it provided. It was just what I needed. I've been knitting for a couple years, so I definitly use this book as a reference. Even an experienced knitter can use this book as a refresher and/or to learn even more techniques.

The book is very easy to use and has a large index in the back. It has a lot of illustrations that demonstrate each technique; each technique is also broken down to include variations. This book is a handy reference for anyone who is serious about learning how to knit.
