Knitting and Crochet

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-A good handicraft book with full-color photographs that illustrate the step-by-step directions. Both boys and girls are pictured creating a crocheted vest, knitted scarf, and a patchwork wall hanging that incorporates both activities. O'Reilly gives the history and some examples of the variety of methods and creations in other times and from different parts of the world. However, what takes this book beyond being a how-to manual is the artistic theme throughout. After providing instructions for the basic stitches, readers are encouraged to make their own patterns based on colors and designs found in art, architecture, and nature. Fitting all of this into such a slim volume means that sections are brief, but the format is accessible. Angela Wilkes's Knitting (EDC, 1986) has a similar format, but is more of a straightforward manual. It contains full-color drawings instead of photographs, and directions for 11 knitted items.-Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
