Overview

Sometimes it is a cherished knitted item that starts a story, sometimes the quest for another skein of the perfect yarn, and sometimes the way knitting is worked into a memory. There's a reason a "yarn" might be a tale or a thread, drawing us along - as these knitters do with their stories of the knitter’s art. Raveling or unraveling, knitters such as Lily Chin, Betty Christiansen, Teva Durham, Clara Parkes, Caroline Herzog, and Lela Nargi take us into their confidence, sharing with us the whimsy, the insights, and simple pleasure that the age-old craft of knitting has brought into their lives—and now ours. Each story in this wonderful collectionfocuses on one of the best parts of the knitting tradition - making a gift for someone special, or receiving a gift, or cherishing a gift that has been handed down through the generations.

About the Author

Lela Nargi is a knitter, author, former journalist, and recent transplant from New York City to rural Vermont. Her book Knitting Lessons: Tales from the Knitting Path, published by Tarcher/Penguin in 2003, documented her adventures in learning to knit, and also featured dozens of interviews with knitters around the country, as a means to understanding what it is about the practice of knitting that draws people in and keeps them returning—sometimes obsessively—to their yarn. Lela’s recent essay about knitting, “Knitting Is Work and the Widows of Sant’Arsenio” is included in Knitting Yarns and Spinning Tales, published by Voyageur Press in 2005.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

Interweave, October 2007

“This is a collection of fourteen essays written by thirteen knitters and one knitter’s husband. Every knitter I know could relate personally … some are deeply moving, others just plain fun, some educational, one or two perfect for putting me to sleep… Ms. Dakin is an exceptional reader. Her tone and voice takes on the personality of the written words so well that I looked forward to hearing the next essay.”

PublishersWeekly.com, Winter 2007

“Knitting Out Loud in Stockton Springs, Maine, bills itself as the only audiobook publisher to focus exclusively on knitting …The first three releases are shipping now: Knitting Memories: Reflections on the Knitter’s Life, edited by Nela Nargi and read by Kymberly Dakin.”
