Overview

Everything old is new again, and this collection of vintage sock patterns mines Weldon's Practical Needlework, a compilation of newsletters published more than 100 years ago, for some of the best. Twenty-four classic patterns are updated here for modern knitters with the inclusion of gauges, contemporary yarns, modern methods, and modern sizes. Filled with fascinating household and historic tidbits from the era, along with little-known tips such as an unconventional way to shape a heel, this historical and gracefully written book evokes a more genteel time while presenting a bevy of colorful socks not seen for nearly a hundred years. After an introduction to a few techniques from the original Weldon's, the patterns begin with an 1887 pair of Gentleman's Shooting Stockings with Fluted Pattern and end with a pair of Ladies' Silk Stockings with Clocks from 1914. Intended for knitters of all levels, this walk down memory lane revives some very classic patterns that may have been gone but are not forgotten.

Editorial Reviews

Knitter's Review
"Rank beginners may need a few socks under their belts before tackling these patterns, but they're worth it."
Knitting News
"I gave this book top scores...great for the history...the sock patterns are excellent."
Knitting News Cast
Great book to get you started knitting traditional socks.
Simply Knitting
While we're all keen to try new things, inspiration is often found in the history of our craft . . . and Nancy's superb book helps us to explore that.
the quarterly publication of the Canadian Guild o Knit Together
Once again Interweave Press has produced a knitting book that is sure to become an enduring classic.
Library Journal
Knitwear designer Bush (Knitting on the Road) takes readers back to 19th-century England with this volume of 24 sock patterns adapted for the modern sock knitter from the British magazine Weldon's Practical Needlework, published from 1886 to the end of the 1920s. These patterns were more chatty descriptions than step-by-step instructions, and the fine yarns and needles used in those days are difficult to find today, but Bush translates each of the patterns into modern knitting language and specifies materials readily available to today's knitters. Recommended for large public library and textile collections. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Knitting Vintage Socks

A very important addition to any sock knitter's library. The patterns are interpreted from Weldon's Practical Needlework series. She includes a history behind the series, different methods of sock construction, i.e. Welsh heel with decreases along the bottom of the heel and some really varied and interesting toe decreases. If you don't like to Kitschener stitch, here is your answer. The sock patterns that she includes from the Weldon's patterns vary from Heeless Sleeping Socks, several patterns for gentleman's socks, and several intricate patterns for children's socks. The book is spiral bound which makes it easy to keep your place. I made the Lichen Ribbed sock for my sister as a birthday gift, and she, a fellow knitter, called me a Knitting Goddess. So the projects in this book are definitely an answer for what to give as a birthday or holiday gift.
