As the introduction by the authors admits, knitting with beads can seem like too much trouble. On the other hand, “beads are lovely.” So these two experienced knitters and teachers have devised a simpler way of bead knitting than stringing beads on the yarn before you knit. Their easier method is to place the beads where they are wanted. Unfortunately, the photos where several of these methods are demonstrated are not much larger than postage stamps. Still, the written explanations are clear, and the photos help a bit. For those who master the technique, 60 handsome projects follow. Hats, hand warmers, shawls, and scarves (lots of scarves) all look better with beads, as it turns out. Some projects follow a strict chart, while others are more random, but the attractive color photographs show off the items nicely. Each project has clear instructions, including a difficulty level. Not surprisingly, many fall into the advanced category. But adventurous knitters will want to give them a go. —Booklist
