Overview

Shirley Paden’s best-selling book Knitwear Design Workshop is the perfect knitting resource.

This book explores the various techniques involved in designing handknitted garments with a perfect individual fit. Knitters at all levels who want to go beyond blindly following commercial pattern instructions will fall in love (all over again) with Knitwear Design Workshop, which pays special attention to knitters who would want to design their own traditional garments, stunning works of wearable art, experiment with garment shaping, write commercial patterns, or simply want to understand how to make minor modifications to commercial patterns. Conveniently, there are no prerequisites for using this book; instead, beginning with the first chapter, readers are guided through the different phases of the design process starting with the initial inspiration followed by a summary of the key design elements.

Every step of the design process is detailed and illustrated for clarity and readers will enjoy instructions for four garments, used to illustrate the steps for designing and knitting garments that fit.

Fabulous book if you want to learn knitwear design

Shirley Paden is without doubt a fabulous designer and this book is the book for all would-be designers to have. From the spiral binding to the detailed description of the design process all the way through how to create the perfectly structured garment with high fashion styling proves that this is one of the best, if not THE best, design book available to knitters. You have to see this book to appreciate its content. The author steps you through the process of sketching, measuring, determining silhouette and garment structure choices, choosing fiber and stitch patterns, charting and pattern drafting. She even shares with the reader some of her most famous designs which have appeared in Vogue and Knitters magazines over the years. Even for advanced knitters, there is must knowledge imparted and many many techniques and structural elements to be learned. Buy this book. You can't have a knitting library without it. must have!!!!

This is absolutely a must have. I actually was lucky enough to find this book at my local library and checked it out. Ive had it for about a week and i realized i do have to take it back and buy my own copy. Its easy to read and all the calculations are worked through step by step as well as how to double check your calculations. Ive already designed my own top and it is coming along as planned. this is about the only knitting book i may ever NEED again!

It is extremely rare that I give any book or movie the highest rating! But this is an amazing book. I have knitted for over 30 yrs, re-worked and re-sized patterns and even taught beginning and Intermediate knitting. I would say this if for the advanced knitter... EXCEPT that there is great information for any level of knitter. It explains in detail how to make AND measure a guage swatch, and how important it is to do it every time. It also explains things so that most people should be able to -re-size designer patterns that they really want to make. Or if skilled enough to easily make their own creations!

Only thing I found ridiculus was the need to explain Grade-School math! If you are over 8 yrs old with a basic education you should know how to measure and calculate square inches or centimeters etc... They even give 'example' equations! This was a waste of space in the book that could have been used for knitting! If you can't do the most basic math you will probablly not understand this book in it's entirety.

I highly recommend this book! Good luck!
