Children's LiteratureThis lift-the-flap board book follows the innkeeper on Christmas night, as he settles his animals in the stable and heads toward bed. He keeps hearing things, and as we lift the flap we see the doves he hears cooing, the lizards scratching as they look for a place to sleep and finally Mary and Joseph looking for a place to stay. The final flap lifts to reveal the family gathered around the manger. The flaps on this book are very thin and they do not all lift in the same direction, i.e. some lift from the side and some from the bottom edge. Although the pages are sturdy, the flaps do not seem sturdy enough to withstand multiple readings. The constantly repeated direction "now lift the flap" is annoying and unlikely to be obeyed, as most children will lift the flap as soon as they find it. 2004, Concordia/AD Publishing Services, Ages 2 to 6.
