Preface

Introduction

As you progress through this book, the author hopes that you will gain a good basic understanding of knot tying and all that it involves. To lead you into the art of knotting, the book begins with a look at the many and varied types of ropes, lines, cords, and twines in production today. Understanding the characteristics of modern ropes is essential when it comes to "Safety," where "Strength, Security, and Suitability" will be your three main considerations in the selection of rope and the "right knot" for the job. Rope is also expensive and needs to be taken care of, not only in use, but also before and after.

Many "tools of the trade" are described to help the reader identify them, but of these only very few will be needed to complete the knots and splices in this book.

For the beginners, there is a gentle introduction to the "Foundations of Knotting," followed by a selection of the knots that get us through everyday life. Progressing to knots devised for more specific uses, the reader can then learn some splicing before advancing into the knots that we now tend to use more for our leisure and pleasure activities.

At the back of the book you will find a comprehensive glossary and a list of books and other sources where you will find more information on knot tying and allied skills.
