School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-8This introductory text focuses on various types of mental disorders and tries to eliminate stereotypes associated with them. Hyde begins with a brief look at the history of treatments, then addresses myths, modern medications, and offers advice for families and friends of victims. The writing is clear and well organized, and includes case studies of young people who suffer from schizophrenia, ADD, depression, obsessive-complusive disorder and more. The text is broken up by some black-and-white archival reproductions and some samples of the young patients' artwork. Children are repeatedly reminded that mental illness is nothing to be embarrassed about or afraid of and that much of the stigma associated with it is simply based on a lack of knowledge. A straightforward, objective presentation.Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY
