Overview

When you’ve got the touch, you’ve got the touch. Singer and guitarist John Pizzarelli, has, over the course of his 25-plus-year career, perfected the art of revivifying time-honored standards. His vibrant vocalizing and jaw-dropping instrumental work energize even the most familiar of songs, and his hand-in-glove rapport with his sleek trio and assorted special guests consistently brings additional luster to the performances. Knowing You features a smart program mixing tried-and-true tunes (“Pick Yourself Up” “The Shadow of Your Smile”), contemporary standards (Dave Frishberg’s “Quality Time,” Maltby and Shire’s “Coffee, Black”), pop classics (The Beach Boys' “God Only Knows”), and Pizzarelli’s increasingly well crafted originals (“Knowing You,” “The First Hint of Autumn”). With assistance from, among others, his wife, singer Jessica Molaskey, and his father, guitar virtuoso Bucky Pizzarelli, as well as saxophonist Harry Allen and keyboardist Larry Goldings, Pizzarelli imbues all he embraces with the ease, assurance, and warmth that his fans have come to expect from this eminently gifted interpreter of quality songs.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Matt Collar
Guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli returns with another solid collection of tastefully swinging standards on Knowing You. Never straying too far from what he does best, Pizzarelli is nonetheless an exciting improviser and pleasing vocalist who always finds a way to make an old chestnut of a tune his own. Here, his rapport with such longtime bandmates as pianist Ray Kennedy, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, and drummer Tony Tedesco is instinctual, full of humor, and filled with call-and-response interplay. To these ends, Pizzarelli has compiled an enjoyable set of well- and lesser-known standards, including the sprightly swinger "Coffee, Black," the elegantly mellow "The Shadow of Your Smile," and the sweetly unexpected Brian Wilson classic "God Only Knows." That interesting song choice and the Rupert Holmes-esque original title track also show Pizzarelli's ability to push his talents into contemporary areas without alienating his fan base. Also joining in are Pizzarelli's wife, vocalist Jessica Molaskey, along with pianist Larry Goldings, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, and others.

From his very first release on vinyl (I'm Hip) to this exciting new CD, Pizzarelli is a master at what he does. "Coffee, Black" is a brilliant discovery, perfectly suited to his off-the-cuff delivery of the trickiest lyrics. Even his own compositions are maturing; on this album, "The First Hint of Autumn" evokes the arrangements of jazz great, Pat Methaney. All around, a gorgeous collection. I only wish his sparkling and witty on-stage personality would translate onto CD!
