In order to succeed in the 21st century, we will need to do more than just adapt to rapid and frequent change. The establishment of caring school communities, or Knowledge Communities, is vital to the positive intellectual, moral, and social development of our children. The pursuit to build Knowledge Communities is neither as politically appealing as the promise to 'leave no child behind,' nor is it as seductive as the offerings supplied by the newest technology. The creation of Knowledge Communities will take much more than using a number two pencil to fill out a standardized form, or providing adequate funds for the newest technological advances. Keeping in mind the adage that 'it takes a village to raise a child,' this book discusses how the local and global village can and should become an active and integral part of the classroom. This work is a valuable tool in advancing the mission of preparing students to intelligently select, sort, evaluate, and synthesize information from a wide variety of sources so that they possess the skills to be knowledgeable learners for life.
