Description: This collection of papers covers a wide range of topics revolving around attempts to successfully manage and retrieve information in the age of globalization. It addresses an array of problems we face in the effort to organize and access knowledge across boundaries.
Purpose: The editors' noble attempt to examine knowledge organization, classification, and management spanning different languages, cultures, and domains results in an excellent collection of papers — wide in scope yet focused on the main subject.
Audience: The book is addressed to all practitioners and theorists interested in knowledge organization and classification and its future. It includes an almost exhaustive catalog of issues, comprising overview articles, surveys, and case studies. The informative papers are written by renowned experts and the book should become a must-read for students.
Features: The diverse array of topics includes attempts to find a single retrieval language and adopt, or translate, existing classification schemes. Other studies cover comparing knowledge management models and classifications as well as addressing ontology of knowledge organization. Finally there are essays exploring the role of human language technology, using the knowledge discovery tools and building knowledge-based products in order to improve, refine, and facilitate cross boundaries searching. Mustafa el Hadi's article on human language technology is the best in the collection. However, even the weakest article, "Knowledge Organization from Libraries to the Web," could be recommended to readers for its superb bibliography. While the editors have done a wonderful job assembling a quality collection of papers, errors occur in citing foreign language references (Polish publisher SBP, i.e. "wydawnictwo SBP" is cited without its name as "wydawnictwo" on p. 12) and a NAICS classification listed does not match its description (p. 224).
Assessment: This is a valuable contribution. By inviting authors from other countries, the editors achieve a truly international focus. Foreign contributors bring to the table not only a different cultural perspective, but also a valuable exploration of studies that would otherwise go unnoticed because of the obscurity of language. Thus, while discussing issues important to all interested in global exchange of information, this collaboration also gives a North American reader an interesting insight into foreign literature.
