Ko Sira

Barnes & Noble - Abraham Velez
Hailing from Mali, the mighty Oumou Sangare first rocked the African pop world with 1991's seminal Moussolou; as in the case of that debut, America had to wait several years before getting its hands on this sinewy follow-up, Ko Sira. Sangare soars again, championing the community-minded wassoulou music of her native country with all the soul muscle of Aretha Franklin and the maternal benevolence of Mercedes Sosa. Her poignant parables about the lives of women in male-dominated Africa could hardly come across with more potency, spun over sparse stretches of violin, flute, steel-string guitar, and bass that recall the entrancing spells of countryman Ali Farka Toure. ...

"Kayini Wura" shakes the rafters with an homage to a local patron and guardian spirits sung over punchy rounds of string work. The messages grow devastatingly keen from there; "Sigi Kuruni" "Advice to a New Bride" speaks of the social limitations and tribulations known to young brides, while "Dugu Kamelemba" calls out the trickery of womanizers and "Bi Furu" denounces the reduction of marriage to dowries and loose ties. But make no mistake: A battleaxe Oumou is not, but rather, an Everywoman's diva with all the charm of an international star and the heart of a peace activist.
All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
A strong set of all-original material that has its cake and eats it too. With unobtrusive electric guitar and bass blending in with more traditional instruments like flute and djembe, it's both more accessible to modern audiences than traditional African instrumentation, and not as pop- and dance-oriented as much contemporary African music. The focus remains on Sangare's gliding singing thickened by a couple of female backup singers and the music's looping but not laid-back grooves.
