Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
As is often the case with tie-ins, this book does not make sense if you are not familiar with the movie it came from. Nigel, an angry koala, lives in a zoo. He does not like being cuddly. He wants to be big and strong. In the same zoo lives Samson, a lion, and his son, Ryan. One day Ryan gets taken to the Wild, but the author does not explain what that means. Samson, Nigel, and many other animals somehow escape the zoo, get a ship, and sail to the Wild, which seems to be a large, volcanic island. Nigel gets separated from the group while looking for Ryan, and falls in with a pack of wildebeests. The wildebeests make the koala their king, but they want to eat the other animals from the zoo. Nigel and Samson fake a fight, which somehow leads to all the animals escaping and getting back on their ship. The illustrations are dark and frightening, and the koala looks slightly evil. If a child has already seen the Disney movie The Wild they might like this book, but it just does not stand on its own. It is a "Step Into Reading" Step 2 book.
