Overview

Anne McCue follows her impressive 2004 debut, Roll, with a gripping collection of original songs that look both inward, at personal battles, and outward, at a world growing more unsettling by the day. McCue is a singer with a silky, conversational drawl that is equal parts Sheryl Crow and Lucinda Williams; a songwriter with a sharp, unsentimental eye and something to say; and a guitarist with a sure, expressive touch. As per the latter, she fashions some jangly retorts and a soaring, wailing solo in "From Bakersfield to Saigon" that embrace stylistic touchstones ranging from Roger McGuinn to Lindsey Buckingham. Mandolin (courtesy Heart's Nancy Wilson) and accordion add a winsome touch to a rustic-flavored, introspective musing on second thoughts following a one-night stand in "Bright Light of Day." The rich textures (a mix of acoustic guitar, a funereal organ ostinato, a crying, George Harrison-like slide guitar howl, and silky, cooing background voices) and somber ambiance of the terse, roiling ballad "Sweet Burden of Youth" magnify McCue's deep disappointment in a feckless lover. "Any Minute Now" rushes headlong toward the Apocalypse, with McCue advising, "When your empire's falling / it will engulf you" -- hits kinda close to home, no? Koala Motel builds on the best of Roll and adds an extra measure of assured artistry to boot.
