Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Smart, clever and irresistibly precious (in a good way)" - The New York Times

"These adorable stories are just as sweet as a shelf full of dolls" - CoolMomPicks.com

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
For those who are not familiar with the term kokeshi, research reveals that they are Japanese dolls originally made in northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and is covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the artist. "Traditional" kokeshi dolls' shapes and patterns are particular to certain regions of Japan. "Creative" kokeshi dolls, however, allow the artist complete freedom in terms of shape, design and color and were developed after World War II (1945). They are not particular to a specific region of Japan. Author Parat has created a pair of books featuring these dolls as if they were alive. In Yumi, readers are taken on a tour of the Kokeshi world. Yumi has been invited to a costume party at Kimi's house along with her best friend Sakumi. The book has multiple facets. It presents the information in English and certain other words and phrases in Japanese. The journey is interactive with questions asked of the reader to help in choosing something or finding a place or object. There are a variety of formats, including flaps to open, gatefolds to lift, and many items relating to Japanese culture on display on the very busy pages. Fish shaped kites fly in the wind on a page that actually has flaps that move and readers see cherry blossoms drifting on the breezes. One of the gatefolds offers a plethora of costumes to choose from and the same is true of the foods available at the party. While the pages are sturdy, this is not really a book for young children, but it is one that can be enjoyed by those in elementary grades up to adult. A very interesting way to pique interest in another culture. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
