When readers dive into Wang's first graphic novel, they may at first believe they have another slacker coming-of-age story on their hands. And to some extent, that is true, although it travels in unexpected directions. Wang follows three characters as they struggle to define their places in the world. Jon is a recent college graduate planning to follow his older girlfriend to Peru to work for an orphanage, and his story, which opens the book, feels the most familiar. In the midst of his existential crisis, he meets Koko, an eccentric, sometimes almost feral young woman who ricochets from encounter to encounter, often leaving a trail of chaos in her wake. The relatively slim plot follows them, as well as Faron, a slight teenage boy, as they wrestle with what it means to be good and how goodness can be combined with happiness. Wang's strength is her art work. The watercolor panels, with an ochre template, are stunning and emotionally evocative, and the book is at its best when she tells the story through images. At times the dialogue sounds too much like a late-night college bull session, especially when it turns to philosophy. But Wang's delicate images, and her ability to capture the earnest emotions of her characters, should pull in all but the most hard-hearted reader. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
In this beautifully rendered graphic novel, Koko, Faron, and Jon are three characters in search of meaning in their lives. Koko is volatile and unpredictable, but wants to be "good," although the outcomes of her actions often undermine her good intentions. Jon is having an existential crisis, trying to decide whether to follow his much-older girlfriend to South America to work in an orphanage when he is not convinced he wants to go. Faron, an orphan who works in a Vietnamese restaurant, fantasizes about being in the theater but lives the life of a scapegoat. Each character searches for purpose and meaning in life, with mixed results. Wang's plot is rather thin, but her images are gorgeous and evocative, and readers will be drawn into the characters' lives through their expressions more than their words. Jon is the most rounded character, but he is also the least likable, as he talks and talks and talks about finding meaning in his life without doing anything about it. Faron, while the least developed, is the most endearing character, primarily because he has the least control over this own life and the biggest unfulfilled dreams. Koko is the novel's central character and its spark; the reader roots for her to channel her good intentions into actions that actually help others as well as herself. Wang's strengths as an artist shine in this novel, which will be most appreciated by older readers who enjoy literary graphic novels. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp

    Great Read, Cute Story.

    I picked this up on a whim in the store; it was the art style that drew me in. I took it home and finished in one sitting. The characters are cute and personable, I couldn't put it down. I just home this becomes a series.
