1. This book is an academic material for the acquisition of Korean language grammar pattern.
2. This book consists of 12 UNITS:
UNIT 1. Number. UNIT 2. Pronoun. UNIT 3. Gerund. UNIT 4. To-infinity. Unit 5. Marker. Unit 6. Linking suffix. UNIT 7. Verb stem and tense. UNIT 8. Adjective and adverb. UNIT 9. Passive voice. UNIT 10. Auxiliary verb. UNIT 11. Modifying verb. UNIT 12. Conjunction
3. This book is focused on how words and sentences are connected and how the structural foundation of expressing himself or herself works. This book provides the grammatical knowledge to foster the effectiveness and precision of expression available in Korean.
4. This book is so learner-centered that self-study is fully available. Sufficient examples and exercises and detailed explanation will also help understand the concept of Korean grammar all by himself or herself.
5. The acquisition of grammar plays a critically important role as an initial process of learning a foreign language and this book will help lead learners eventually to the way of creation of full sentences with less chance of errors.
Refer to the following script:
1.location marker 에 or 에서: action verb + 에서/static verb + 에
•to live in Korea(한국): 한국에서 *to live: 살다
•to be on the tree(나무): 나무위에 *to be: 있다
2. statement quotation + 고:
•They said, "Korea is beautiful": 아름답다고 *to be beautiful: 아름답다
3.request quotation + 라고 or 으라고:
•He recommended that I swim. = He recommended me to swim: 수영하라고
4. question quotation + 냐고 or 는지
•He asked me if I go: 가냐고/가는지 *to go: 가다
Exercise. Read the following sentences and draw a line under the markers or suffixes.
-나는 학교에 갔습니다(나: I/학교: school/갔습니다: went)
*는: subject marker *에: direction marker
-그는 그녀를 사랑합니다(그: he/그녀: her/사랑합니다: loves)
*는: subject marker *를: object marker
4. verb stem in past tense (to have + past particle): ㅆ다 or 었다 or 았다
•갔다: to have gone = went •왔다: to have come = came
5. Adjective(ㄴ or 은 or 운) + noun
*root verb stem ending in vowel + ㄴ
•목마르다(to be thirsty): 목마른(thirsty) *르 ends in vowel ㅡ. Just add ㄴ.
6. passive voice:
*root verb stem ending in consonant + 히
•먹다(to eat): 먹히다(to be eaten) *먹 ends in a consonant ㄱ. Add 히.
•잡다(to catch): 잡히다(to be caught) *잡 ends in a consonant ㅂ.
7. auxiliary verb:
*CAN/COULD implies ability or probability
root verb stem ending in consonant + 을 수 있다(can)/을 수 있었다(could)
•찾다(to find): 찾을 수 있다(can find)/찾을 수 있었다(could find)
*찾 ends in consonant ㅈ. Drop 다 and add 을 수 있다 or 을 수 있었다.
8. modifying verb:
1)modifying verb in past tense: ㄴ or 은
•보다(to see): 본(to have seen) *보 ends in vowel ㅗ. Add just ㄴ. The movie(영화) that he(그) saw: 그가 본 영화
•잡다(to catch): 잡은(to have caught) *잡 ends in consonant ㅂ. Add 은. The ball(공) that he caught: 그가 잡은 공
2)modifying verb in present tense: 는
*root verb stem ending in consonant or vowel + 는
•닫다(to close): 닫는(closes) *닫 ends in consonant ㄷ. Drop 다 and add just 는.
The door(문) that he closes: 그가 닫는 문
•쉬다(to relax): 쉬는(relaxes) *쉬 ends in vowel ㅣ. Drop 다 and add 는.
The room(방) which he relaxes in: 그가 쉬는 방
